The McCain Global Leaders Program is a fellowship designed for mid-career changemakers who embody the legacy of Senator John McCain. This program brings together a diverse cohort of leaders from across the globe—including Africa—to engage in high-level training on democracy, human rights, and character-driven leadership. The 2026 program is built around several regional and thematic modules, providing fellows with the tools to tackle modern security and governance challenges in their home countries.

Eligibility

  • Applicants should be mid-career professionals with at least 10 years of experience.
  • There is no strict age limit, though most participants are between 30 and 45.
  • Candidates must have a proven track record of ethical leadership and community impact.
  • Working proficiency in English is required to participate in international modules.
  • Applicants must be prepared to travel for the three in-person modules throughout the year.
  • Leaders from various sectors, including government, civil society, and the private sector, are eligible.

Benefits

  • Full coverage of travel and lodging expenses for all program modules.
  • A stipend provided to cover incidental costs during the fellowship.
  • Access to a world-class network of mentors, including former heads of state and global policy experts.
  • Participation in a “Legacy Tour” in the United States focused on democratic values.
  • Membership in the McCain Institute’s global leadership alumni network.

Application Steps

  1. Review the program’s core values and focus themes for the 2026 cycle.
  2. Complete the online application form, including professional experience details.
  3. Submit a video statement (usually 2 minutes) explaining your leadership philosophy.
  4. Provide two letters of recommendation from high-level professional contacts.
  5. Participate in a series of virtual interviews if shortlisted.

Deadlines

  • Applications typically close in early 2026 (exact date varies by regional cohort).
