Fellowship Overview

The Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) Ocean Leaders Fellowship 2026 is a prestigious global leadership programme created to support young professionals who are actively working to protect oceans and address climate challenges.

Open to emerging leaders from Africa and around the world, the fellowship equips participants with the skills, networks, and confidence needed to influence ocean conservation efforts at local, national, and international levels. The programme blends virtual learning with an immersive in-person leadership experience, helping fellows turn community-based knowledge into global impact.

For Nigerians and Africans working in marine conservation, climate advocacy, blue economy initiatives, or coastal community development, this fellowship offers a rare opportunity to connect local action with global decision-making spaces.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Be between 18 and 35 years old as of 20 June 2026
  • Actively work in ocean conservation or climate action, with a strong interest in the 30×30 global conservation target
  • Align with one of SOA’s five Ocean Impact Areas
  • Possess advanced English proficiency (C1 level) to fully participate in global discussions
  • Be available for international travel from 9–19 June 2026
  • Must not have previously attended:
    • Our Ocean Conference (OOC) youth forums, or
    • UN Ocean Conference (UNOC) youth forums

The fellowship is particularly suitable for Africans leading grassroots initiatives, NGOs, startups, research projects, or advocacy campaigns related to oceans and climate resilience.

Benefits and Support

Selected fellows receive comprehensive leadership and professional development support, including:

  • Structured skills-development workshops focused on leadership, systems change, and collaboration
  • Access to experienced global mentors in ocean and climate sectors
  • Opportunities to collaborate with peers from different regions and disciplines
  • Fully supported participation in an international leadership institute and global conference in June 2026
  • Long-term inclusion in the SOA global alumni network, opening doors to partnerships, funding opportunities, and policy influence

The programme is designed to help fellows make measurable, lasting impact in their communities and beyond.
