The International Fellowships Programme 2026 is a prestigious initiative jointly administered by the British Academy and the Royal Society. This program is designed to attract outstanding early-career postdoctoral researchers from around the globe to the United Kingdom. It provides a unique platform for international scholars to conduct high-quality research at UK-based institutions, fostering long-term scientific collaboration and professional development. For African and Nigerian researchers, this fellowship offers a significant gateway to global academic networks and world-class research facilities.

Eligibility

To be considered for the 2026 cohort, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicants must hold a PhD or have a school-certified date for their viva or thesis defense before the fellowship start date.
  • The program is specifically for early-career researchers who do not hold a permanent academic post in the UK.
  • Candidates must be working in any discipline within the natural sciences, social sciences, or humanities.
  • Applicants must have a clearly defined research proposal and a confirmed host at a UK university or research institute.
  • Nigerian and other international scholars must be able to demonstrate a high level of English proficiency to succeed in a UK academic environment.

Benefits

Successful fellows receive an extensive support package including:

  • The fellowship covers the researcher salary and contributes to research expenses.
  • Funding is provided for essential research equipment, consumables, and field trips.
  • Fellows receive support for relocation to the UK and visa-related costs for themselves and their dependents.
  • Access to a prestigious network of alumni and fellows from the British Academy and the Royal Society.
  • Opportunities for career-enhancing workshops, seminars, and international conferences.

Application Steps

Follow these steps to complete your application:

  • Identify a suitable UK-based university or research institution and secure a support letter from a host supervisor.
  • Draft a comprehensive research proposal that highlights the originality, feasibility, and potential impact of your work.
  • Create an account on the British Academy or Royal Society designated application portal (Flexi-Grant).
  • Provide contact details for referees who can attest to your academic record and research potential.
  • Submit all required documents, including your CV, research proposal, and host organization statement, before the closing date.
