The World Bank Group (WBG) Africa Fellowship Program is a highly competitive initiative targeting young, talented African nationals who are either currently completing or have recently finished their Ph.D. This program is a cornerstone of the World Bank’s effort to develop the next generation of African leaders in international development. Fellows are placed in Washington, D.C., or regional offices for six months, where they gain hands-on experience in economic policy, research, and technical assistance aimed at poverty reduction.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be a national of a Sub-Saharan African country.
  • Candidates must be recent Ph.D. graduates (within three years of completion) or enrolled in their final year of a Ph.D. program.
  • Applicants must be under the age of 32 by the closing date of the application period.
  • Excellent command of English (written and verbal) is mandatory; proficiency in French is a plus.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills are essential.
  • Research interests must align with the World Bank’s priority sectors (e.g., Education, Health, Agriculture, or Finance).

  5. Shortlisted candidates will undergo interviews before final selection for the January start date.

  • Applications typically open in August and close in late September 2026 for the 2027 intake.
