Applications are now open for the 2027 CECIL Renaud Overseas Scholarships, a prestigious opportunity for outstanding young South Africans to pursue postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom.
The scholarship was established through Dr Cecil Renaud and is managed by The Cecil Renaud Educational and Charitable Trust. The programme supports academically exceptional students who demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to excellence.
Each year, one or two scholarships are awarded to students pursuing postgraduate studies at leading universities in the United Kingdom.
About the Scholarship
The CECIL Renaud Overseas Scholarship provides funding for postgraduate study in the United Kingdom for a maximum period of two years.
Successful applicants may pursue:
- Master’s degrees (or equivalent qualifications)
- PhD programmes
Recipients are free to choose any accredited university in the United Kingdom, provided they secure admission into their preferred programme.
The scholarship aims to support talented South African students in gaining world-class education and contributing meaningfully to society upon completion of their studies.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
Academic Excellence
Candidates should demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and must:
- Have obtained, or be expected to obtain, undergraduate or Honours degrees with excellent academic results
- Be capable of gaining admission into top universities in the United Kingdom
- Have earned academic distinctions such as Dean’s Commendations, Certificates of Merit, or equivalent recognitions
Study Status
Applicants must:
- Be studying at a South African university
- Have completed or currently be completing:
- An Honours degree, or
- A four-year undergraduate degree
KwaZulu-Natal Secondary School Requirement
Applicants must have attended secondary school in KwaZulu-Natal.
Age Requirement
Applicants must be under the age of 27 at the time of application.

The scholarship is open to students from all academic disciplines.
Previous scholarship recipients have studied programmes including:
- Development Studies
- Applied Theology
- Mathematics
- Singing and Performing Arts
