Apple has officially opened submissions for the 2026 Swift Student Challenge, inviting student developers worldwide to design and submit Swift-based app playgrounds that demonstrate creativity, technical skill, social impact, or inclusivity.
Organised by Apple Inc., the annual Swift Student Challenge has become one of the most recognised global coding competitions for students learning app development on Apple platforms.
The initiative encourages young developers to apply their programming skills to real-world problems while gaining exposure to the global Apple developer ecosystem.
Challenge Scope and Project Requirements
The 2026 Swift Student Challenge requires participants to create an app playground that can be experienced within three minutes. Submissions must be fully self-contained and capable of running without a network connection. All resources, including media files and supporting assets, must be stored locally within the project package.
Entries must be submitted as an app playground project file in .swiftpm format and compressed into a ZIP archive not exceeding 25 MB.
Each submission must be created individually. While templates are permitted, they must be modified by the applicant. Students may incorporate third-party open-source code, public-domain images, or sound assets, provided proper attribution and explanation are included.
Apple will recognise 350 winners whose submissions demonstrate excellence in innovation, inclusivity, creativity, or meaningful social impact. From this group, 50 Distinguished Winners will be selected and invited to Apple’s campus in Cupertino for a three-day experience. All winners will receive one year of membership in the Apple Developer Program and an official Apple gift.
Eligibility Criteria for the Swift Student Challenge 2026
The competition is designed for students developing software skills and is not open to individuals employed full time as professional developers.
Participants must meet minimum age requirements based on their country or region. The minimum age is 16 in the Philippines, Germany, Malaysia, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Singapore, and Slovakia. Other regions set eligibility at 13, 14, or 15 years old depending on local regulations.
Applicants must be registered with Apple as a developer or hold active membership in the Apple Developer Program. They must also meet at least one academic eligibility condition, which includes:
Current enrolment in an accredited academic institution or official homeschool equivalent
Participation in an Apple Developer Academy or recognised STEM curriculum
Recent graduation from secondary school with confirmed or pending admission to higher education
Graduates of accredited institutions remain eligible for up to 90 days after completion. Recent secondary-school graduates may apply within six months of graduation.
An individual may receive a Swift Student Challenge award up to three times. However, Distinguished Winner status can only be granted once.
Development Tools and Technologies
Submissions must be built using Swift Playground 4.6 or Xcode 26 or later. Swift Playgrounds allows students to create apps directly on supported Apple devices, while Xcode supports app playground development through the iOS App Playground project type.
Participants may incorporate Apple Pencil functionality where relevant. Apple also provides structured learning materials through the Develop in Swift curriculum, which introduces students to app design concepts including discovery, prototyping, validation, interface design, and iterative development.
Students are encouraged to explore advanced technologies such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, and spatial computing where appropriate to the app’s purpose, reflecting Apple’s emphasis on innovation in modern app development.
Community and Educational Support
To support preparation for the 2026 Swift Student Challenge, Apple promotes participation in Swift Coding Clubs, which help students collaborate and strengthen coding skills.
Participants may also seek clarification through the Apple Developer Forums, using the Swift Student Challenge tag when posting technical questions.
Educators are provided with dedicated teaching resources, including an educator guide aligned with the Develop in Swift tutorials. Additional classroom materials are available through the Apple Education Community to help integrate app development into school curricula and encourage student participation in global coding competitions.
Submission Process and Evaluation
All submissions must be built in Swift Playground or Xcode and must be fully functional within a three-minute experience window. Apple requires that all submission content be in English. Because entries are evaluated offline, all functionality and media must be included locally within the ZIP archive.
Apple positions the Swift Student Challenge as an opportunity for students to demonstrate coding ability through practical, real-world application projects. The programme encourages young developers to build apps that address challenges within their communities while contributing to the broader Swift developer ecosystem.
Submission Deadline
Submissions for the Apple Swift Student Challenge 2026 are open until 28 February 2026.
